Ethical Self-Publishing Services

The terms “self-publishing” and “indie author” can be misleading. Every good book is a collaboration and author-publishers need good editors, designers, formatters, distributors and book promotion services to help them produce good books and reach their readers.

But authors must make their publishing choices in an unregulated environment:

No wonder many authors are confused or overwhelmed.

ALLi has a number of services to help steer authors through what one of our watchdogs, Victoria Strauss, has called self-publishing’s “shark-infested waters”.

Watchdog & Service Ratings

ALLi’s watchdog desk is headed by John Doppler and Jim Giammatteo with input from community and member feedback and other vigilant author advisors like David Gaughran and Mick Rooney of The Independent Publishing Magazine.

From this information, mystery shopping, other online and offline research and member feedback, ALLi is able to provide authors with service ratings, warnings against rogue operators and recommendations of good services, globally. We publish an annual overview of this work as a guide for authors: Choosing A Self-Publishing Service.

And we amplify the information in this book with blog posts in our Author Advice Centre and Watchdog Reports in our member zone.

Choosing A Self-Publishing Service
In this annually updated publication Jim Giammatteo, one of our watchdogs, draws on his extensive knowledge to compare the most significant self-publishing services, tell you what they do and don’t do, what they charge and for what. Offerings are categorized, prices examined, royalty structures broken down, terms and conditions trawled, small print scrutinized, and claims checked against the experience of real-life authors who have actually used these services. Members receive a free copy on joining. Also for sale in our Self-Publishing Advice Centre, and all good outlets.

Ethical Self-publishing Services are a highly valued strand in our alliance.
