Ella Hamilton writes slow-burn contemporary romance, particularly for readers who love with their whole heart but feel there are bits missing – both in themselves and in their relationships – with sometimes-distressing outcomes.

Her debut series Tarot For Two follows a tarot reader who can't predict romance for herself, and the client whose readings frustrate her as much as her own do!

Littlehampton in West Sussex, UK, the main setting for the story, has a beautiful beach and a strong community spirit, and is family-friendly. Ella's books, by contrast, are adults-only with content warnings due to some of the events and experiences the characters face.

The story arc progresses through heartbreaks and healing to offer an insider's look at how neurodivergence can create ongoing challenges for communication between two people trying to get to know one another.

It's an even wider gap when the ND person isn't aware of their different brain wiring in those terms. Ignorance is not bliss, in this scenario.

When people gain a greater understanding of themselves, as Jamie and Lori (the protagonists) do, they can start building bridges towards a common goal.

But it takes more than a few pages to join the two ends, especially when they're building from very different starting points: neurotypical on one side, and unrecognised neurodivergence on the other.

The everyday moments in the books carry as much weight as the major ones, because that's where the real relationship forms. Or, in this case, fails. Repeatedly.

(Spoiler alert: the series has a happy ending. Eventually.)

With Books Three and Four awaiting their turn under the editor's pen before they can step into the limelight alongside Book One (Alone) and Book Two (Apart), Ella keeps herself busy with Book Five which, so far, hasn't given her its name.

"It's being a stubborn little git!" She laughs. "But it'll tell me when it's ready. Book Three didn't give me its name straight away, either, but we got there. In the meantime, if it wants to be secretive, my next project is hopping up and down to be channelled through my fingers."

Ella works as a conduit for Spirit with the books' content, writes what she's given, and doesn't shy away from the tougher scenes even when they're out of her comfort zone.

"There were a few moments in Book One where I had to lay my head on the desk and cry, to release the characters' emotions enough so I could carry on," she admits. "I feel both Jamie and Lori deeply. Probably because they're aspects of my inner self, as well as 'people' in their own right. They have opinions on everything – sometimes polar opposites. But knowing myself better, as I do now, means that doesn't surprise me at all!"

Ella was diagnosed with ADHD in 2024 and suspects she has ASD alongside it. She also holds a tarot certification from Radleigh Valentine. The tarot readings in the books were done by her at the time of writing, plus she reads tarot for clients via email – like Lori does.

"Being true to myself is critical," she says. "The mask I learnt to wear across my life came off during perimenopause and went straight in the bin. I can't put it back on because it no longer fits. Besides, I wouldn't want to. This is who I am – ND and living my best life!"

Tarot For Two is on Amazon in ebook format. UK readers can order signed paperbacks from Arcade Bookshop in Littlehampton or direct from Ella herself. Internationally, unsigned copies are available through Amazon.
