Time is running out on Planet 444, known as Ziran. The planet was terraformed in 2585 for a human colony experiment by Syganoids, a highly advanced race of humanoids. Eight hundred years later, the forgotten planet is no longer capable of producing food and the inhabitants are starving and sick. They believe their stars' radiation is poisoning the food and causing disease.
The main characters, an antagonistic group of four, encounter aliens through a supernatural mind-enhancing drug. Despite their differences, they must now work together to save the colony. The aliens and The Source are their only hope to escape the planet and find a new home. Two of the four create a chemical that, when consumed, allows others to hear the alien's voice. The other two are leaders of the heavily divided population. One is a strong dictator and the other is a spiritual guide.
As they struggle to live with the developing chaos and the existential crisis, the alien takes control of the colony's supercomputer, kills one leader, and conspires to persuade the segmented colony to follow it on a fatal journey into the quantum universe.
